Making the drive from K3 to the North Side of Chicago is nearly always arduous; in this case, it was even moreso. A collision on the Dan Ryan Expressway backed up traffic for miles, and too much idling in the jam meant that I had to make an emergency stop for gas – in the heart of the city, at LaSalle and Ontario. Eventually I showed up at the restaurant where we were scheduled to meet up.
The only things I knew for sure about dwlt before I met him were that he’s a Scot and that he and Des form a unit. I had browsed his goals list in order to get some ideas about what songs to put on the mix CD I was making for the evening, but it didn’t give me any clear impression. I must regret to say that meeting him didn’t help a whole lot with that either. He remains something of a mystery man to me – and I suspect he likes it that way! dwlt simply does not talk very much about himself. I was able to find out some of his thoughts on Scotland, and he told us a little bit (though nothing confidential) about his work, and I know now that he has a book habit and really prefers non-fiction over fiction, but that’s about it.
When the evening came to an end, I was genuinely sorry to see it go, and part of the reason for that was that I really wanted to get a chance to speak more with dwlt. Maybe I’ll get that chance at some point in the future, maybe not. For now, Subscribing to his website entries is the best I’m likely to get, although perhaps some correspondence is in order…
